Against lethargy of Municipality in providing civic amenities
PUDUKOTTAI: A couple of councillors staged a novel protest at the Municipal Council meeting held here on Friday.
A councillor, Mohan (Congress), alleging that the municipal administration had been lethargic in executing civic amenities in the town, spread a mat he had brought to the council-hall and staged a dharna by lying on it.
He alleged that the Municipality had not initiated action for desilting the Mappilyarkulam in the town. Drinking water supply should also be augmented.
He also voiced protest against the frequent transfer of Municipal Commissioner and Engineer which “adversely affected the execution of even the finger-count on-going schemes” in the town.
Attempts by a few councillors to persuade him to withdraw the stir proved in vain for some time.
However, he resumed his seat following an assurance by the Municipal Commissioner Balakrishnan that the demands would be looked into.
Another councillor, Shanmuga Pazhaniappan (CPI) alleged that the Municipality had incurred wasteful expenditure for purchasing sanitary accessories including brooms and bleaching powder.
He distributed pamphlets, alleging that the rates of purchase were high and above the norms admissible as per rules.
The Chairperson, Ramathilagam Udaiyappan, who presided over the meeting, assured the councillors that steps would be taken to redress their grievances.
