Swimming pool planned
CHENNAI: Shanmuganar Park, one of the oldest such facilities in Tiruvottiyur, will soon sport a new look and also house a swimming pool to provide improved recreation for the entertainment-starved residents of north Chennai.
Spread across an acre of land, the park on Tiruvottiyur High Road is frequented by about 200 people every day. Residents said the 40-year-old facility was the biggest of the seven parks in the area. T. Dayalan, one of the regular visitors to the park, said though it was the one of the few green spaces in the area, it was in a bad shape with overgrown bushes and a poorly maintained pond.
An official of the Tiruvottiyur Municipality said the park would be renovated at a cost of Rs.32 lakh, of which Rs.30 lakh would be spent on construction of the swimming pool near the children’s play area.
The work would also include repair of the artificial cascade and some landscaping. The project was supported by the funds of the Member of Legislative Assembly, District Collector and Member of Parliament.
The official pointed out that most areas in north Chennai did not have a swimming pool, even those of private service providers.
The upcoming facility in the park would be useful for residents.
With a coach to be appointed shortly, the swimming pool would particularly benefit children interested in learning to swim, he pointed out.
The work would be completed by April next year.
Shanmuganar Park, whose maintenance would be privatised, is expected to attract at least 400 visitors every day, the official added.
Another park in Tiruvottiyur, established with several facilities including a walkers’ path at a cost of Rs.2.50 lakh is to be inaugurated by the end of this month.
Fisheries Minister K.P.P.Sami is expected to participate in the event, the official said.
