CHENNAI: Instead of the usual goofy humour, the puppet show on Sunday had enraptured children listening to the story of a child who longed to study but forced to work as domestic help. Fired for looking through the books at the house, she is finally rescued by a social worker and sent to school.

At the end of the show, children who had occupied all the available space at the venue, Valluvar Kottam, took a pledge to continue their education and work for gender equality. The show was part of a programme organised by Asha Nivas, a voluntary organisation working with women and children, to celebrate Children’s Day.

The participants included children from transit schools, coaching centres, special schools and non-formal education centres.
