DMK youth wing session at Villupuram turns into condolence meeting

VILLUPURAM: Local Administration Minister and DMK deputy general secretary M.K. Stalin converted a session of the party’s youth wing here on Saturday as a condolence meeting to pay homage to the slain Tiruvarur party secretary Poondi Kalaiselvam.

He announced cancellation of the Cuddalore and Puducherry youth wing meetings. At his behest, the participants observed silence for two minutes.

Mr. Stalin recalled that when he recently visited Thiruvarur to address the youth wing workers, Kalaiselvam took him to the venue in a chariot. Kalaiselvam was an efficient leader, and his untimely death had moved Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to tears, he said.

Mr. Stalin said he learnt about the attack when he was on his way to Villupuram. He was in a fix whether or not to accept the reception given here. But he accepted it as a matter of duty because he did not want to disappoint the large gathering of youth.

Mr. Stalin came to invite the youth for the Tirunelveli youth conference scheduled for December 15 and 16. So far he has covered Karur, Namakkal, Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Virudhunagar, Sivagangai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvarur, Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, Perambalur, Krishnagiri, Vellore and Thiruvannamalai.

At Karur, the youth wing gave him a purse of Rs.1 lakh, and at the successive meetings, the amount was raised voluntarily to meet the expenses of the conference. At Namakkal, it was Rs.2 lakh, Coimbatore Rs.33 lakh and at Thiruvannamalai Rs.51 lakh.

Villupuram made the highest contribution of Rs.55 lakh (district party unit Rs.22 lakh, youth wing Rs.22 lakh and the Thalapathi Stalin Narpani Manram Rs.11 lakh).
