TIRUNELVELI: Additional Director for Municipal Administration D. Chandrasekaran began random checks relating to illegal drinking water connection scam at some parts of eastern Palayamkottai on Saturday.

Following the detection of 365 illegal drinking water connections from the KTC Drinking Water Scheme, which was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, four technical personnel of the Corporation were placed under suspension.

Moreover, the Commissioner for Municipal Administration ordered an on-the-spot enquiry by the then Corporation Commissioner and Additional Director for Municipal Administration Mr. Chandrasekaran.

During his visit to some of the houses in the ‘problem area,’ including some parts of Keezhanaththam village panchayat, on Saturday, Mr. Chandrasekaran, accompanied by Assistant Executive Engineer of Palayamkottai Zone T. Shanthi, asked the residents whether they had obtained new drinking water connection (from the KTC Nagar Drinking Water Scheme) and how much they had paid and to whom. “The field verification will continue on Sunday also and I’ll submit my report to the government after that,” Mr. Chandrasekaran told The Hindu.

When he returned to the Corporation office after verification, AIADMK councillor Sudha K. Paramasivan and former councillor S. Sudalaikannu, who unearthed the water connection scam by obtaining crucial details about the KTC Nagar Drinking Water Project through Right To Information Act, and office-bearers of Confederation of Tirunelveli Corporation Officials’ and Employees’ Associations met him and submitted a memoranda in connection with the water connection scam.
