Mylapore Academy conducts the Children’s Day programme

CHENNAI: One day in a year for children to have a good time, but also to showcase their talents.

A painting and fancy dress competition for students, specially the underprivileged and differently abled, was conducted here recently by the Mylapore Academy at the National Public School, Gopalapuram.

“The Mylapore Academy has been conducting programmes for Children’s Day for 25 years and this year is no different,” said secretary of the Academy C. S. Veeraraghvan.

From Krishna and Avvaiyaar to Gandhi and Nehru, the children in fancy dress costumes stole the show in the evening while morning belonged to young budding artists who were busy sketching diverse themes, including children flying kites on the beach and young people helping the disabled.

Mr. Veeraraghvan said 1,000 children participated in the event, of whom around 150 were physically or mentally challenged.

“The competitions were open to students of all classes, but we had different levels for them.” He said the judges were very impressed with the paintings.

“They told us that every year the standard seemed to improve. We are happy that we are able to provide the children with this opportunity,” he said. The young artists appeared to take the competitions seriously, going by a sense of concentration written large all over their faces.

The little actors in fancy dress, on the other hand, were happy just posing for cameras.

At the end of the day prizes were distributed to 42 lucky children, including six who were physically challenged, said Mr. Veeraraghavan.
