Tirupur: Around 300 lawyers affiliated to Tirupur Bar Association (TBA) and Tirupur Advocates Association (TAA) boycotted the court proceedings on Friday to protest against the proposed amendment to Section 138 of Negotiable Instruments Act.

Advocates said that the proposed amendment would force a person who was accused of dishonouring cheque to pay 50 per cent of the amount, upon appearance in the court, to contest the case.

“This is against natural justice and hence, the move should be dropped,” T. Gopal, vice-president, TBA, and B. Sivakumar, secretary, TAA, said. They also protested against the amendment to Sec. 377 of IPC, which decriminalised homosexuality.
