Man held for attempt to smuggle diamonds

CHENNAI: Customs officials at the Anna international terminal on Tuesday arrested a person for allegedly smuggling diamonds and precious stones.

C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs, (Airport), said Radha Mohan Nanda Gopal, 38, of Tiruchi, arrived from Bangkok. While examining his suitcase, the officials found a cardboard carton that the passenger said contained noodles. An inspection revealed that under the noodle packets, the passenger had concealed diamonds, studded jewellery and precious and semi-precious stones inside polythene covers.

The officials seized American Diamond worth Rs 3.80 lakh, cut and polished ruby (Rs. 8.80 lakh), cut and polished yellow sapphire (Rs 3.60 lakh) and diamonds (Rs 12.80 lakh).

Preliminary investigations revealed he had been offered Rs. 60,000 to hand over the stones to someone outside the airport.
