CHENNAI: All India Lawyers Union Tamil Nadu State Committee on Tuesday welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court Collegium to defer the elevation of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice P.D. Dinakaran as a judge of the Supreme Court in view of serious allegations against him about possessing assets disproportionate to the known sources of income. In a release, K. Elango, general secretary, Tamil Nadu State Committee, said “It is needless to say that these allegations have to be inquired into on a time-bound basis by the Supreme Court and pending such enquiry, he should not be permitted to discharge any official duty.”

“Such an enquiry is absolutely necessary to restore the confidence of the people in the judiciary, which has come to occupy an important place in a democracy. Any compromise on this issue will affect the fair name of the judiciary.” He suggested constitution of the National Judicial Commission since the Collegium as a selecting body failed to prove to be a better mechanism.
