“Conduct proceedings in a transparent manner”

MADURAI: More than 300 members of the Madurai unit of the Tamil Nadu Medical Students and House Surgeons Association staged a demonstration here on Monday urging the inclusion of student representatives in the Sambasivarao Committee.

The committee has been formed to examine the Union Health Ministry’s decision to introduce compulsory rural service for medical students from next year.

Citing the move to conduct hearing in only 20 cities in the State, B. Kalaikovan, secretary of the Madurai unit of the Tamil Nadu Medical Students Association, wanted the committee to hear the views of students of all medical colleges. The committee should also include representatives from doctors’ associations, medical experts, parents of students and social activists. The committee should conduct its proceedings in a transparent manner and concentrate on issues relating to filling up of doctors and medical assistants’ vacancies in hospitals. “As it has been decided by our central unit not to boycott classes and duty, we attended classes today,” he said.
