VILLUPURAM: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy inaugurated ‘HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment projects’ to be implemented by non-governmental organisations here on Tuesday.

The projects will be implemented in 22 blocks of Villupuram district, including Ulundurpet, Thirukkoilur, Ginjee, Koliyanur and Kalvarayan Hills. The Association for Rural Mass India (ARM) will take up the work in 11 blocks and Carmalite Sisters of St. Theresa, the remaining.

Owing to medical intervention, the quality of life of AIDS patients could be improved and their lifetime extended. The NGOs should play a significant role in ensuring the success of such projects, Mr. Ponmudy said.

Collector Brajendra Navnit appreciated the NGOs for their contribution towards the cause of HIV/AIDS patients.

However, there were some gaps to be filled at the Primary Health Centres and Government Hospitals.

Regular check-ups during pregnancy were an absolute necessity, he said.
