Fix floor price for raw leaves, they demand

Udhagamandalam: With thousands of small tea growers in various parts of the Nilgiris who have for long been demanding a floor price running out of patience, a meeting of farmers and manufacturers held at Kotagiri on Monday decided to take to the streets to draw the attention of the Central and State Governments to their plight.

It was organised under the aegis of the Nilgiris District Small Tea Growers and Manufacturers Association and other farmers associations.

Regretting that the patience of the tea planting community was being tested by officials and elected representatives of the people, the participants pointed out that the economy of the district was in an unhealthy state on account of the prolonged crisis in the tea industry. They resolved to stage a demonstration in front of the tea auction centre in Coonoor on October 29.

It was also decided to resort to a series of agitations from November 13 if appropriate action to fix a floor price for the raw leaves was not taken.

A Joint Action Committee would be formed for the purpose.
