Farmers allege that industries are taking advantage of the heavy rain

ERODE: Taking advantage of heavy rain along the Erode-Bhavani main road, some tanneries and textile production units have discharged untreated effluent into drains and odais, which in turn flow into the Sunnambu Odai and empty into the Cauvery, farmers in the area claim.

Based on the orders of the Madras High Court, many textile and tannery industries have erected reverse osmosis plants and are treating effluents. But still, the Pollution Control Board personnel said a few were not treating the effluents they were discharging. Following this, they closed a number of such textile industries in Erode and Bhavani areas.

Farmers said that there were still some textile industries that were discharging untreated effluent into the Kalingarayan canal.

The Pollution Control Board personnel have issued stern warnings, stating that all textile and tanning industries should treat the effluent and ensure zero discharge.
