Exam toppers of Corporation, aided schools honoured

CHENNAI: People in North Chennai get more facilities whenever Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is in power, Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan said here on Wednesday.

Giving away cash prizes to students of Chennai Corporation and aided schools in Perambur Assembly constituency who had scored highest marks in Standards X and XII examinations in 2006-2007 at a function organised by the “Dr.Kalaignar Kalvi Arakkattalai” (educational trust), he said there were more schools in Perambur as against just one or two in the past. Realising the difficulties faced by students belonging to backward, most backward and poorer sections of society, the State Government introduced several welfare schemes for them.

While the first and second prizes for the toppers in Standards X and XII in Corporation Schools were Rs.5,000 and Rs.4,000, the third prize for Standard X was Rs.3,000. The third and fourth prizes for Standard XII were Rs.1,500 each. Cash prizes were given also to a few other students for their performance in the examinations.

Teachers were also honoured.

Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna, referring to the presence of a large number of girl students at the function, said women had progressed much in various fields.

However, several social evils still continued in society. Education of women could help in keeping such evils under check.

Transport Minister K. N. Nehru said the trust was being run for the past 10 years. Trust president Chengai Sivam and DMK’s district secretary L.Balaraman were among those who spoke.
