TIRUNELVELI: The managements of self-financing engineering colleges, under the jurisdiction of Anna University–Tirunelveli, should offer attractive salary to woo the best technical brains to join their faculty so that the quality of technical education will improve, Vice-Chancellor S. Kaliappan has said.
Addressing a meeting of the principals and correspondents of the private self-financing engineering colleges here on Monday, he said the institutions under Anna University–Tirunelveli should strive hard to deliver quality education by setting right the lacunae in the faculty and the infrastructure.
Besides excellent pay and perks, the teachers should be encouraged to participate in conferences and seminars held abroad. “Housing facility or housing loans can also be given to the faculty members.”
Some self-financing engineering colleges had attracted faculty members of the College of Engineering, Guindy, as they wanted to offer quality technical education, he said.
The Vice-Chancellor also recalled the instances in which some self-financing colleges lined up the “temporarily hired outsiders” as faculty members during inspections. “It is nothing but cheating the students, their parents, society and your own institution.”
He assured the principals and correspondents that the Anna University, through the faculty development programme, was prepared to help the colleges improve the quality of technical education and train their faculty members in improving the students’ communication skills to make them employable.
“We, with the assistance of advanced software at present available, have planned to train 40 English teachers of the engineering colleges under Anna University–Tirunelveli in two batches so that they can produce the best engineers with excellent communication skills that will win them the best offer in the highly competitive job market,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
Dr. Kaliappan, who has put in 25 years of service, said the colleges should give importance to strengthening of laboratories and libraries by installing advanced equipment and subscribing to technical journals.
Students should be encouraged to go in for online subscription of foreign journals and magazines.
