Durai Murugan says they should also be involved in framing of syllabus

CHENNAI: Students should be given representation in academic councils of universities to enable them to play a decision-making role in academic affairs, Minister for Public Works and Law Durai Murugan said on Tuesday.

Student representatives must also find a place in university syndicates and senates and should be involved in framing the curricula, he said, inaugurating the Student Day Celebrations held part of the Commemoration of the Sesquicentennial Year of the University of Madras.

The Madras University had produced many leading personalities, including political leaders, scientists, economists, artists, thinkers and lawyers. Despite the presence of such institutions of higher education, only eight per cent of the country’s population had access to higher education. He promised to take up with the Chief Minister the issue of building student hostels on the university’s Guindy campus.

Students should imbibe the spirit of rationalism and give up unscientific thoughts and beliefs, M. Naganathan, Vice-Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission, said. The Students Day celebrations would feature cultural performances by students of the university and affiliated institutions. Students who excelled in academics, cultural activities and sports were felicitated. M. Ranganatham, Registrar (in charge), and G. Shanmugham, syndicate member, were present.
