THENI: The district office of the Bharatiya Janata Party was attacked and its members were assaulted, when a demonstration held by the local DMK unit turned violent on Monday.
A police inspector was manhandled by the protesters.
A group of DMK men, led by district secretary L. Mookaiah, attempted to burn the effigy of the former BJP MP, Ram Vilas Vedanti, when Palanichettipatti police station Inspector Seemaisamy tried to stop it.
In the tussle, a section of the partymen dragged him and pushed him aside. Other policemen, who tried to rescue the officer, were also manhandled.
The effigy was torn to pieces in the scuffle. Later, it was set afire by the cadres.
Another group pelted stones at a mini bus. The windscreen of the bus was damaged.
BJP members assaulted
Later, a group of DMK men, who were returning to Cumbum and Chinnamanur after the demonstration, stopped the vehicle near the BJP office at Palanichettipatti, three km from Theni, and attacked it. They also assaulted the BJP members with sticks. BJP district president Om Balakrishnan lodged a complaint to Superintendent of Police R. Sudhakar and Collector Har Sahay Meena.
