CHENNAI: The State Government has announced that Rs.7.35 crore will be allocated for providing a monthly maintenance amount for children and adults who are mentally challenged.

In a press note, the All India Confederation of Organisations for Persons with Mental Disability has thanked the Government for its allocation, which will benefit 20,000 children and adults with mental disabilities. They will get a monthly grant of Rs.500. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had promised the assistance at a Confederation conference in February, it recalled.

Confederation secretary S. Namburajan and vice-president Parvathy Viswanath urged the Government to do away with the criteria of disability (60 per cent) used to identify the beneficiaries. Even a ten per cent disability incapacitated a person permanently and prevented him/her from earning a livelihood. — Special Correspondent
