Coimbatore: The Judge of the Special Court for Bomb Blast Cases, K. Uthirapathy, said here on Thursday that hearings on the plea on sentences by defence counsel would start on Friday. The serial blasts of February 14, 1998 left over 50 dead and over 250 injured.

Defence counsel Mohammed Abubacker and Basheer Ahmed are expected to submit the plea on sentences in respect of 32 of the 70 accused found guilty of the charge of conspiracy.

Earlier, defence counsel S.K. Raghavan had sought to give his reasoning regarding its findings in respect of the charges so as to enable defence to submit its plea on the sentences, and filed a petition citing provisions in the Criminal Procedure Code.

The Judge had asked the prosecution to file a counter on whether there was any legal bar on allowing defence to peruse the copy of the judgment (bar the portions relating to sentences). The Judge said the petitions relating to permission to peruse the synopsis of the court’s findings in respect of the charges would be taken up on Tuesday.
