On offer are five variants from Lenovo (IBM-Thinkpad) and Dell (Lattitude)
Variety of application software tools have been pre-loaded
CHENNAI: The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu is aiming to take affordable computing to students.
On Wednesday, the ELCOT launched an exclusive student laptop scheme, under which Dell and Lenovo models will be made available to students at much lower rates.
This is for the first time that the ELCOT is going in for public sales of IT products.
Procured in bulk
“The laptops have been procured in bulk and are available at heavily discounted rates, almost 40-60 per cent less than the market prices. We have evaluated the products and assessed their Windows and Linux compatibility. The scheme is open to all students domiciled in Tamil Nadu, from kindergarten to postgraduate levels,” C. Umashankar, Managing Director, ELCOT, told The Hindu.
On offer are five variants—with the prices ranging from Rs. 24,000 to Rs.30,000—from Lenovo (IBM-Thinkpad) and Dell (Lattitude).
A variety of application software tools have been pre-loaded to help in testing software development, all of which have been standardised in ELCOT’s e-governance software development centre.
These are the same models the ELCOT made available to bureaucrats in the State recently.
“We will also facilitate training in Linux and Linux-based software development to students in districts at very affordable rates. The three-year international warranty available for the models will facilitate students seeking studies/jobs abroad,” Mr. Umashankar said.
The Lenova Thinkpad R 60, available for Rs.29,000, has a 512 MB RAM and 80 GB HDD, including a high-end T2300e Intel Core Duo Processor, and can give gigabit speed connectivity while being used at either a college network or a regular broadband connection.
Yet another Lenova configuration, priced Rs.32,000, comes with a 1GB memory and 120 GB HDD.
Three Dell models also come with similar configurations, and are priced at Rs.29,000-Rs.31,000. Market rates for all these models are Rs. 44,000 upwards.
