MADURAI: The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder, Vijayakant, has called for a permanent solution to end the attack on fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy. Attributing the problem to handing over the Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka, he held the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, responsible for that. He also termed “eyewash” Mr. Karunanidhi’s suggestion of getting the Katchatheevu on lease to put an end to the problem.
Stating that all these years, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam was accused of being behind the firing at fishermen, Mr. Vijayakant said, “Now that it is claimed that the LTTE has been eliminated, how is the firing continuing.”
He told reporters here on Tuesday that the party, which had called for a fast in New Delhi on September 29, had also sought an appointment with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Minister for External Affairs S.M. Krishna.
“When Tamil fishermen are being attacked, three lakh Tamils are suffering in Sri Lanka and Tamils are tortured in Malaysian prisons, where is the necessity to organise a World Tamil Conference,” he asked.
