For services to the cause of children with cerebral palsy
TIRUCHI: Honouring of special teachers marked Teachers’ Day celebrations at the Spastics Society of Tiruchi on Wednesday.
Five senior special teachers — J. Navamani from the Musiri branch of the Society, A. Grazy from the Lalgudi branch, Savariammal from the Thuraiyur branch, C. Indira and T.S. Gowri, both from Tiruchi, — were each honoured with a shield “in appreciation of their services” to the cause of children with cerebral palsy.
The function, organised jointly by the Rotary Club of Jambukeswaram and the Society, provided a rare opportunity for the teachers to share their experience in handling the children.
Alli Swarnam, head of the Department of Library Science at Bishop Heber College, and Club president G. Suresh felicitated the special teachers.
Society director C. Shanthakumar traced the role played by the Parents’ Support Group, an exclusive body formed by the Society in 2001. The group played a crucial role in offering counselling to new parents on bringing up children with cerebral palsy. It was instrumental in availing government concessions. Awareness programmes were being conducted in villages on cerebral palsy, he said.
On future programmes, Mr. Shanthakumar said a short-term training programme on “Management of cerebral palsy” would be conducted for the benefit of parents. A book on cerebral palsy would also be released shortly.
The special teachers, in their acceptance address, said parents should focus on the behavioural development of their wards with cerebral palsy. They also gave tips on imbuing self-confidence among such children.
