Velliparambu has written more than 6,000 songs
CHENNAI: Malayalam Mappila poet Bappu Velliparambu was felicitated at a function here on Sunday.
Mappila songs are folklore, Muslim, devotional songs sung in the Malayalam language and generally performed at weddings.
Mr. Velliparambu has written more than 6,000 such songs and his lyrics have been sung and popularised by singers including K.J. Jesudas and S. Janaki.
The felicitation, organised by the People’s Arts Centre is in recognition of Mr. Velliparambu’s contribution to the Mappila song tradition.
Information Minister Parithi Illamvazhuthi, conferring the honour on Mr. Velliparambu said, the poet’s service to this genre of music was unmatched.
A souvenir, highlighting the achievements of the poet, was released.
The function also included a Mappila song musical extravaganza. In a message, Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahmed said the Mappila songs had been passed down for generations through an oral tradition. “I congratulate the organisers for honouring Shri Bappu Velliparambu for his contribution and through him for the promotion of the Mappilappattu as well.”
