SALEM: Population control is essential to reduce poverty and ensure better socio economic conditions, speakers said at the seminar organised in connection to the World Population Day here on Wednesday.

Joint Director of Health S. Janaki said that early marriage for girls, illiteracy, ignorance and gender inequality were the main reasons for the population growth. People should realise the negative effects of population explosion. She stressed that the girl child education should be encouraged. With education, people would understand the need for family planning and preventive healthcare.

There should not be any indifference to girl’s education. A press release said that the incidents of female infanticide and foeticide had led to the decline in the sex ratio. According to 2001 census report, the sex ratio in Tamil Nadu was 987 women per 1000 men.

Senior officials were present in the seminar.
