Purpose is to ease traffic congestion: Highways Department
TIRUPATTUR: The Highways Department, after a long gap, has again swang into action to clear encroachment throughout Tirupattur. The operation, which began on Tuesday morning, continued till late evening .
The eviction is being carried out in the earmarked areas coming under the Highways Department. The Tirupattur Municipality, on its part, has not so far initiated action to ease the booming traffic congestion. Encroachers continue to occupy every bit of the space at the Tirupattur bus terminus.
In fact, the situation has become worse as vendors inside the bus terminus have now started to park their vehicles inside the bus stand.
Though the police constable on beat is quite aware of the situation, he is not in a position to take action as there is no clear instruction from higher officials.
Commuters say that the municipality does not seem to bother about the problems faced by floating and local passengers. “Why cannot the municipality think of giving an alternative place for encroachers and evict them. Strict enforcement has to be imposed,” they point out.
One of the Highway Department officials, supervising the eviction operation, says that the department will intensify the eviction drive along Tirupattur-Krishnagiri Main Road, which sees heavy traffic congestion during peak hours. Pedestrians face problems as there is hardly any space for walking. The main culprits have been the roadside vendors.
“The Highways Department got full cooperation from roadside vendors. They have not resisted our move. The main reason for this is that the department had given advanced notice to all of them.” Illegal structures on the highways are being demolished using an earthmover. The debris were immediately removed from the road. “The main purpose of the eviction is to ease the traffic congestion. The operation must be beneficial and not a ‘nuisance’ to motorists and pedestrians,” officials point out.
Stating that it will be a continuous operation without any disruption, officials say that once the eviction operation is over, the Electricity Department will be shifting electric poles.
To expand road space
The Highways Department plans to expand the available road space. The entire Tirupattur-Krishnagiri Main Road will be converted into two-lanes. The Highways Department has decided to put a central barricade along the entire stretch to ensure free flow of traffic.
Work on the barricade will begin in two months time, they say.
