CHENNAI: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday gave away computers to town panchayat representatives at the Secretariat here.

In the first phase, as many as 375 of the 561 town panchayats will be provided computers and broadband connectivity and the remaining will be given within a month.

The town panchayats will communicate with local administration offices on a real-time basis once the computers are set up.

Quicker tracking

This would enable quicker and more efficient financial tracking and help the local bodies become aware of the latest government schemes and programmes.

Regular videoconferencing

Apart from this, regular videoconferencing would be organised between town panchayats and the directorate of town panchayat offices so that outstanding issues could be settled without face-to-face meetings, said an official. The quicker flow of information both ways would also help in making modifications to plans drawn up and help the directorate become more responsive, the official added.

The directorate also planned to computerise issue of birth and death records and property tax matters.
