CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday paid rich tributes to E.V.R. Periyar for his stellar role in women’s emancipation and removing superstitious beliefs among people.

Presiding over the 100th day celebration function of the feature film Periyar, Mr. Karunanidhi said the revolutionary leader’s philosophy was relevant even today.

“I was keen that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Cabinet colleagues in the should ensure the success of the Periyar movie not to achieve box office success, but to see that the life and movement of Periyar did not face any failure”, he said appreciating actor Sathyaraj for his role of Periyar. Describing Periyar as one of the revolutionary leaders the likes of whom the world would not see again, Mr. Karunanidhi listed the numerous sacrifices made by him keeping the interests of society in mind.

He presented the ring worn by Periyar to Sathyaraj and unveiled a plaque to mark the foundation stone of a new block to be built on Periyar Thidal on the occasion.

K. Veeramani, president, Dravidar Kazhagam, explained how the film, released against all odds, was running successfully.
