CHENNAI: The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), Tamil Nadu, organised a meet here on Tuesday to celebrate the Helen Keller’s 127th birthday and to acknowledge and support the initiatives of several visually handicapped persons in the city.
Chief guest at the function Member of Parliament Kanimozhi said, “a lot of Government plans are never implemented. We have to understand that there are problems. These have to be overcome. Federations such as this forms a bridge between the Government and the people and make sure the plans actually reach the people,” she said, adding that she wanted them to continue their hard work and not stop till their rights are achieved.
V. K. Jayakodi, State Commissioner for Disabled participated in the function.
NFB General Secretary Sahadevan said, “every year we celebrate this day to encourage our people to achieve the same level of success as Helen Keller did. Though she had multiple disabilities, she achieved so much in her life with her courage.” Students who had scored high marks received educational cassettes. The NFB had made arrangements for those involved in self-employment to receive business kits like chair weaving wire and goods selling kits.
