They participate in meetings but never sign in the register

OMALUR: Everything seemed to be moving smoothly. Heated debate, point of orders, accusations, explanations…

The council meeting of Kadayampatti panchyat is progressing on Monday.

But with a difference.

Many of the participants were not at all councillors. They were either the husband or the son of many a woman elected member.

Such practice is in vogue in many other unions too in Omalur and the nearby Taramangalam block in the district.

A majority of the eight women councillors in the 19-member Kadayampatti council rarely attend the meetings, said an official in the Block Development Office at Kadayampatti.

These men who have usurped the roles of the women ward members, however, never sign the registers.

They will come, participate in the meeting and go away. A staff would be summoned to get the signatures of the elected representatives to keep the records right, said the official.

What was more disturbing during the hour-long meeting held on Monday was the presence of the husband of the Union Chairperson R. Vinodha Rani. He sat between the Block Development Officer and his wife, the chairperson, on the podium itself, while the council meeting was on.

After discussing many issues, the council passed a unanimous resolution, last but not the least hailing the victory of Pratibha Patil, the first woman President of an independent India!
