to seven-year imprisonment for rape, agrees to compensate victim

CHENNAI: Actor Mansur Ali Khan, who was found guilty of rape and sentenced to seven years imprisonment by a trial court, was acquitted of all charges by the Madras High Court after he agreed to pay Rs. 10 lakh as compensation to the victim.

In his order on Monday, Justice R. Regupathi said: “Counsel for the appellant (actor) states that he is willing to deposit Rs. 7 lakh so that all put together it is Rs. 10 lakh as compensation, payable to the victim to take care of herself and her child, without prejudice to the claims.

In view of the above, conviction imposed on the appellant (actor) by the trial court is set aside. He is acquitted, and directed to pay a sum of Rs. 7 lakh within a period of six weeks from today.”

The victim had alleged that she was drugged and raped by the actor since December 1996. Relying on the evidence such as the DNA analysis report,

Justice S. Ashok Kumar, who was the Principal District and Sessions Judge of Chennai in March 2001, found the actor guilty of rape and cheating, and awarded seven-year RI besides a fine of Rs. 3 lakh.
