NAMAKKAL: The district administration has invited applications from youth for admissions to the short-term training programmes to be conducted by the L&T, a construction firm in Chennai.

The firm will conduct the following courses: Three-month courses - Carpenter, Mason, Turner and Fitter - Persons aged between 18 and 40 who can read and write in Tamil are eligible; Plumber (3 months) and Electrician (3 month) Persons aged between 18 and 25 with SSLC and ITI qualification are eligible; Welder (2 months) Persons aged between 18 and 30 with ITI qualification or experience welders are eligible.

Accommodation and a monthly stipend of Rs. 2,000 will be provided to the participants of the training programmes. After successful competition, the persons could get jobs at the construction sites of L&T. Based on skill levels, they could get a sum of Rs. 3,000 to 4,000 per month as salary. Persons from families listed below the poverty line are eligible to apply for these programmes. The application forms can be obtained from the Mahalir Thittam office. The last date for submitting the filled in application forms is July 30.

The Non-Governmental Organisations and Panchayat-level federations for the self-help groups can also submit the applications with a list of interested persons for admissions to the training programmes.

National seminar

The Vinayaka Missions University in association with the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (Education Division) organised a two-day national seminar on prospects and perspectives of Pharm.D programme. University Chancellor A. Shanmugasundaram inaugurated the seminar. Speakers highlighted the need for introducing the six-year Pharm.D programme in the country. More than 600 students from various institutions participated in the seminar.
