THANJAVUR: People of 65 villages in Thanjavur and Budalur panchayat unions will not forget President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. His concept, Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA), has provided them with physical, electronic, knowledge and economic connectivity.
Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women here has taken up the implementation of the President’s concept. Dr. Kalam inaugurated the Periyar PURA scheme on December 23, 20003. Eight Periyar institutions, 9000 students of different discipline and 850 staff have taken up the task of providing urban amenities in these villages.
Today, school children in these hamlets are able to interact with Periyar educational institutions at Thanjavur and learn communication skills, Mathematics, English and gain knowledge in any subject they want , thanks to the electronic connectivity provided through computer, internet, phone and Wi-MAX facility. Farmers and women self-help groups can interact with experts in various fields and get their doubts cleared.
Three villages, Veeramarasanpettai, Rayamundanpatti and Achampatti villages, have knowledge centres. Broadband Wi-Max connectivity has been provided for interaction with villagers.
The villages also get pure protected drinking water supply. Periyar PURA in collaboration with San Diego State University has put up a water purification plant of 60,000 litres capacity in the villages.
