ERODE: A statue for Dheeran Chinnamalai will be installed at the mani mandapam constructed at Odanilai near Arachalaure here soon.
Born on April 17, 1756 at Melapalayam near Chennimalai, Theerthagiri alias Chinnamalai joined as a soldier in a dynasty at Kongunadu and formed a group of warriors to oppose the British. Three major combats were reported in 1801, 1802 and 1804 and he won the three and created fear among the British Government. The place where he fought with the British Army in 1802 was named Odanilai.
He constructed a small fort there. In 1805, the British Government caught him and hanged him at the Sankagiri Fort on July 31, 1805 (Tamil month Aadi 18). So his death anniversary is being celebrated on Aadi 18 for the last four years at Odanilai.
In memory of the martyr, the Governmen has constructed a mani mandapam at Rs. 30 lakh at Odanilai. The Government has decided to construct a kitchen in the mandapam at Rs. 7.50 lakh.
This year, the death anniversary will be celebrated on August 3 for which meetings were held. Handlooms Minister N.K.K.P. Raja, Highways Minister M.P. Saminathan and Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan attended. Fifteen legal heirs of Chinnamalai also attended and decided to celebrate the anniverary in a grand manner.
