VELLORE: The Vellore district police, the striking force and personnel of the Naxalites Special Division (NSD) carried out joint search operations in the hill villages on the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border on Sunday morning.

The exercise was undertaken to check on possible infiltration of naxalites into the district from Andhra Pradesh following a State-wide alert sounded in the wake of the infiltration of naxalites in Theni district.

Briefing newspersons about the operations at the Morethana reservoir site on Sunday, N. Arivuselvam, Superintendent of Police, Vellore district, said a special team comprising one Additional SP, one Deputy Superintendent of Police, four Inspectors, six sub-inspectors and 20 personnel of the striking force carried out the search operations, along with the regular police, along a 20-km stretch in the border hill villages.

More than 60 police personnel, including the policemen of the striking force, divided themselves into two groups and carried out the operations.

One group searched the areas from Rangampatti to Thandansirasu via Morethana, while the other group searched via Kottaram Madugu up to Morethana.

The SP said 200 km of forest areas lay along the Tamil Nadu border with Andhra Pradesh in Vellore district. Daily monitoring was on in the areas where naxalite infiltration was suspected.

The police were also creating awareness among the inhabitants of the border hill villages.

The people there were being asked to inform the police if they came across suspicious persons or those who were new to the villages. Government students’ hostels were also being checked in order to monitor the infiltration of naxalites under the garb of old students, he said.
