TAMBARAM: A call taxi was gutted in a fire that broke out in the vehicle at Pazhavanthangal on Saturday.
Police said the driver of the vehicle, equipped with a Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) kit, was proceeding towards Nanganallur. Near the Pazhavanthangal police station, the driver noticed smoke from the engine and got down. Soon a fire broke out and damaged the entire vehicle.
The driver of the call taxi abandoned the vehicle and fled from the spot. By the time a fire tender from Guindy came to the spot and put out the flames, the vehicle was completely gutted.
Police are investigating if a substandard LPG conversion kit was used. Some weeks ago, a car went up in flames on East Coast Road and a jeep was gutted due to an electrical short circuit at St. Thomas Mount on Grand Southern Trunk Road.
