NEW DELHI: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said on Wednesday that his department would provide 9,000 habitations in Tamil Nadu with protected drinking water supply this year, with financial aid from the Centre and the State.
In his address at a meeting of Ministers in charge of water supply and sanitation in New Delhi, Mr. Stalin said the Centre had sanctioned Rs. 191 crore and the State, Rs. 411 crore to achieve the task. Also, the quality of water in as many as 5,574 habitations had been found to be poor.
The Government had so far taken action to provide 5,431 of these habitations with protected water.
The remaining habitations would be covered this year, Mr. Stalin said, detailing the progress of works in Tamil Nadu.
He said that as many as 1,286 wells had been dug across the State to check the quality of water.
Water testing centres had been established in all districts to periodically check the quality of water being supplied.
Tamil Nadu was a pioneer in the water harvesting scheme, he said and added that so far 3,186 water harvesting structures had been created at a cost of Rs. 109 crore.
Because of the interest the Government took in rain harvesting, as many as 1.72 lakh government buildings in cities and towns and 48.11 lakh private buildings had installed rain water harvesting structures.
Similarly in rural areas, 66.67 lakh buildings/houses had installed rain water harvesting structures.
The government was committed to providing access to sanitation facilities to all people.
By the end of the year, all schools in the State would have sanitation facilities. This year, as many as 296 village panchayats had received the Nirmal Gram Puraskar for maintaining their villages cleanly.
Mr. Stalin said that the Centre should consider providing 100 per cent finance for protecting water sources and ensuring that these could be tapped in a viable manner. At least 30 per cent of the money spent on the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme should be used for water conservation activities.
Mr. Stalin met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and talked about the ongoing projects in his Ministry in Tamil Nadu.
