ERODE: All panchayat presidents in the district should help banks and the district administration in bringing people under the banking fold, said Collector T. Udhayachandran.

Speaking at a financial inclusion meeting organised here on Tuesday, he said ‘banking for all’ was not a mere slogan but a movement. “It is not statistics driven,” he said, to drive home the point that a mere opening of account to show numbers was not enough.

To the bankers he was more forthright. “I see every suicide due to usury as a failure on the part of the bank managers,” he said and added that it was in effect a complaint against bank managers. He also demanded from them a commitment to provide easy banking for all.

He then told the local body presidents that no money or introduction was needed to open the accounts and urged them to spread the message in their locality to bring more people into banking.

Mr. Udhayachandran also talked about schemes for unemployed youth and wanted the presidents to help such youth in their region.

A handbook containing all such schemes would be printed soon for distribution. Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, R. Rajasri explained the benefits of opening an account.
