Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the State Government to announce its stand on the proposed expansion of the Coimbatore airport.
According to a release from R.A. Govindarajan, District Secretary (in charge) of the party, the Airports Authority of India has decided to expand the Coimbatore airport. It is learnt that the runway would also be expanded .Though there had been no announcement from the State Government regarding acquisition of lands for the purpose, the people residing in the vicinity of the airport – Chinniampalayam, Venkitapuram and Goldwins-- were agitated apprehending that they would be affected. They had already represented to the District Collector also. Hence, the State Government should explain its stand on the proposed expansion and allay the fears of the public.
He also demanded that the Coimbatore –Dindigul section be converted into broad gauge.
He pointed out that this demand had been there for long and various organisations, political parties, and industry and trade bodies had been clamouring for this. Though Rs. 36 crore was allotted for the broad gauge section work between Coimbatore and Pollachi, this amount had now been diverted for laying the second railway line between Dindigul and Madurai. “This is deplorable.”
Hence, the Coimbatore-Pollachi work should be started as planned immediately.
In addition, he pleaded for status quo in the operation of the Coimbatore-Bangalore Intercity Express.
He pointed out that the train, which had been running between Coimbatore-Bangalore for long, had recently been extended up to Ernakulam. This had resulted in severe accommodation crunch for the passengers of Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Salem region. If Ernakulam region required additional space for passengers, there was nothing wrong in introducing new trains. But extending the current Intercity Express up to Ernakulam was not acceptable. That train should be operated only between Coimbatore and Bangalore and vice versa.
