TIRUCHI: Hundreds of members of Forum for Physiotherapists observed a fast in Tiruchi to draw the attention of the Government to their demands that included creating the post of Physiotherapist at the level of Primary Health Centre.

Opposing the functioning of several private colleges of physiotherapy without the recognition of the Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, the forum members urged the Government to fill nearly 5,000 vacancies, appointing those who had passed out from the Government physiotherapy colleges. Several Government hospitals were functioning with scant strength of physiotherapists, they said.

According to S. Mohan, district unit secretary of the forum, the certificate and diploma programmes conducted by unrecognised institutions ran counter to the interests of the students undergoing the 4.5 years-long programme in the Government Physiotherapy Colleges. Though physiotherapists have to be treated on a par with doctors, private hospitals paid a pittance taking advantage of the absence of exclusive State Council for physiotherapists

The State president of the Forum for Physiotherapists V. Krishnakumar, and Secretary S. Suresh spoke.
