Tuticorin: Tension prevailed at the Municipal Council meeting here on Tuesday as residents of Ward 32 entered the hall protesting against "erratic supply" of drinking water.
A resident, S. Sakthivel, doused himself with kerosene and attempted self-immolation protesting "step motherly treatment" meted out to them by municipal officials. Policemen overpowered him and thwarted the suicide bid. The police registered a case against him.
All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors led by N. Suresh Kumar came to the meeting with goats protesting against "lackadaisical administration." They alleged that their demands in the last council meeting for action against a fish processing unit at Krishnarajapuram, which was allegedly dumping waste into Buckle Channel in the town, was not addressed so far.
They said that four goats and a cow died after consuming the contaminated water.
Mr. Kumar handed over a memorandum to the Municipal Commissioner, R. Lakshmi, seeking immediate action against the unit. "If no action is taken, we will intensify the agitation," he said.
The Municipal Chairperson, R. Kasturi Thangam, said that the administration plans to take up four road projects soon on an outlay of Rs. 21.55 lakh.
Similarly, the repair of a chlorine plant located at Rajaji Park would be carried out at an estimated cost of Rs. 70,000 during the current fiscal.
