Girl killed in accident

TIRUCHI: A nine-year-old girl, Priyanka, was fatally knocked down by a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus on the Tiruchi-Karur highway at Mutharasanallur on Sunday. The girl had come along with her parents to attend a function in her relative's house at Pazhur. Later, the girl along with her parents went to have a bath in the Cauvery river and was walking back to the relative's house. The police said that the girl and her parents were walking on the roadside when the Tiruchi-bound bus from Karur, while overtaking a lorry, hit the girl.

"Enable police to cancel licence"

The Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam has appealed to the State Government to pass an ordinance giving powers to the police to cancel the licence of those two-wheeler riders who do not wear helmet while riding the vehicle.

In a statement, its district president S.T. Rajendran said that in accidents involving two-wheelers nearly 80 per cent resulted in head injury threatening the life of the motorist.

Power shutdown

There will be no power supply in the following places on May 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. owing to maintenance work to be carried out at the sub-station in Alundur: Viralimalai, Nagamangalam, Manikandam, Fathima Nagar and Alundur.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 74.52 feet against the full level of 120 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 896 cusecs and the discharge was 1,500 cusecs.
