Decision taken at tripartite meet of estate representatives, officials

  • Tourism Department to install a view tower at Maharajamettu
  • Road linking Odaipatti junction, Iravangalaru dam to be repaired

THENI: Highwavys town panchayat will become one of the major tourist attractions soon as a private estate management has tentatively agreed to hand over the main road and an elementary school, which were under its control, to the Government.

Already, the district administration had obtained permission to construct an additional travellers' bungalow at Maharajamettu. It also urged the estate management to provide land for laying link road to the bungalow.

These decisions were taken at a tripartite meeting among estate representatives, Revenue and Tourism officials held at the panchayat on Tuesday.

With sylvan surroundings, the Highwavys town panchayat has a number of attractions like Manalar, Venniyar and Iravangalaru dams, Megamalai estate and Maharajamettu, where tourists view vast catchments of Thekkadi dam, Magarajothi hill of Sri Iyyappan temple and a bird's eye view of Theni district.

The originating point of Suruli falls on the hill is another major attraction.

At Iravangalaru dam, which holds water throughout the year, boating facility could be created.

The Tourism Department has planned to install a view tower at Maharajamettu to enable visitors to enjoy the hill station.

There were also plans to repair the highly-damaged main road stretching upto 65 km between Odaipatti junction and Iravangalaru dam.

Meanwhile, a team of experts from Anna University has camped at the town panchayat to map the entire area using Global Positioning System.

They would identify the forest and revenue lands in the panchayat to undertake developmental activities.

The experts would submit their report to the Government for future planning and development of the hill station, said the officials.
