Protest against attack onDinakaran

CHENNAI: More than 100 journalists courted arrest here on Saturday following denial of police permission for taking out a rally to protest the attack on the Madurai office of Dinakaran.

Journalists from various media organisations in the city gathered near the Dinakaran office, intending to submit a memorandum to the Director-General of Police, demanding action against those involved in the attack.

The rally was originally planned to start from Kutcherry Road in Mylapore to the office of the Director-General of Police on Kamarajar Salai. The police told protestors that a small group of representatives could submit their memorandum to the DGP.

However, the journalists decided to take out the rally and were arrested. They were detained in a marriage hall at Mylapore for over an hour and released later. They demanded transfer of the police personnel in Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tuticorin, Theni and Dindugul districts to create a climate for a free and fair inquiry. They also sought a departmental probe.
