"Industry booming in State"

TAMBARAM: A Special Economic Zone need to be set up for the boiler industry, on the lines of the fabrication industry in Tiruchirapalli, S. Rajarethinam, Special Commissioner and Secretary, Public Works Department, said on Friday. Addressing the inaugural function of `Boilers 2007', a three-day exhibition at Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam, the official said boiler design and engineering should be given special attention.

"We should introduce newer and efficient technologies. Tamil Nadu should demonstrate to the world that we can excel in the field of boilers as we have done in the auto, textile and software industries," Mr. Rajarethinam said.

Encouraged by the manufacturing skill, quality consciousness and delivery commitments, many western countries were looking at India, particularly Tamil Nadu, for outsourcing engineering, manufacturing and other services connected with boilers, he said.

"All the boiler companies (in Tamil Nadu) are pleasantly overbooked and are launching expansion programmes," he remarked.

The government was taking steps to train rural manpower, available in abundance, to direct them to the boiler industry, the PWD Secretary said.

R.N. Mishra, Executive Director, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, said he quantum of power generation was not enough to meet demand. He said the country would need 2 lakh MW by 2012. "We have to add aother 70,000 MW of power supply to meet the requirements by that year," Mr. Mishra said. The boiler industry was adapting to Information Technology sector in creation of `3D models' of plants apart from other departments.
