TIRUCHI: Six persons were killed, and two sustained injuries, when a lorry overturned on the Tiruchi - Chennai national highway near Samayapuram early on Tuesday.

Muthuirulayee (42), Pandiammal (35), Lakshmi (58), Panchavarnam (40), Mariswaran (18) and Kannaiyan (28) hailed from North Mathur village in Sivaganga district. Police sources said the vehicle, on its way from Melur in Madurai district to Chennai, carrying plantains. The victims were travelling atop the load and were thrown off when the driver lost control while trying to overtake a vehicle.

The police personnel rushed to the spot and rescued Paagan (60) and Chandru (19), who were injured but had a miraculous escape. They were admitted to hospital. Transport Minister K.N. Nehru visited the hospital here and distributed Rs. 50,000 each from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the families of the victims.

The driver and the cleaner are absconding.
