Garbage disposal will be carried out by advanced scientific means: Stalin
CHENNAI: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin informed the Assembly on Wednesday that the Chennai Corporation would take major improvements to its dumping grounds in Kodungaiyur and Perungudi at a cost of Rs.255 crore.
"Disposal of garbage at these dumping grounds will be carried out by advanced scientific means. Further, adequate vehicles will be for transportation of garbage will be procured," he said.
Considering the effectiveness of the privatisation of garbage operations, he said that the government had issued orders to privatise garbage collection in Zone 3,6,8 and 10.
Two desalination plants
The government was setting up two desalination plants -- one at Nemmeli and another at Minjur.
The Nemmeli Sea Water Reverse Osmosis Plant will have a capacity of 100 mld. The Centre would fund this plant and will be set up in 40.05 acres in Nemmeli village.
Tenders for consultancy for preparation of detailed project report have been received and were being evaluated, the Minister said. The first phase of the 100 mld Minjur plant -- with 15 mld capacity -- will be commissioned in June 2008.
The plant will reach its full capacity three months from then.
