Three new drinking water schemes to be executed

Civic bodies told to give details of areas prone to water scarcity

TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board will execute three new combined drinking water supply schemes (CWSS) in the district during the current year.

Four other CWSS, spilling over from the previous financial year, would also be completed during the year, TWAD officials said.

The Board had taken up five schemes last year at a total cost of Rs.69.82 crore.

Among the major schemes that are to be completed this year was the water scheme for Tiruverambur and 43 habitations, being executed at a cost of Rs.4.90 crore. The Kadavur-Vaiyampatti CWSS would be completed by July.

The Lalgudi CWSS, sanctioned at the cost of Rs.1.91 crore, was already under trial run and would be commissioned shortly.

Tenders for the Manikandam union and 46 habitations, sanctioned at a cost of Rs.11.74 crores, would be finalised soon.

The TWAD Board has also taken up a separate scheme for Andhanallur and 22 habitations at a cost of Rs.80.21 lakh. Combined drinking water supply schemes for M. Pudupatti in the drought-prone Thathiyengarpet union, Andhanallur and seven habitations near Tiruchi and Peria Suriyur and seven habitations in Tiruverambur union would be taken up this year at a total cost of about Rs.80 lakh.

TWAD officials said that Marungapuri, Manapparai, Vaiyampatti, Tiruverambur and Manikandam unions in the district would be fully brought under the Cauvery drinking water schemes this year.

These apart, the water supply improvement scheme for Musiri Town Panchayat, being executed at a cost of Rs.1.31 crore, would be completed by May 31.

The Collector Ashish Vachhani has instructed all panchayat union chairpersons to provide details of vulnerable areas that were prone to drinking water supply scarcity during the summer.

Panchayat unions could take up water supply augmentation schemes up to Rs.5 lakh by themselves, Mr.Vachhani said.
