`Lead a life for themselves and sink differences'
TIRUPUR: Poet Kanimozhi asked working women to consciously develop a sense of spirit and courage to fight any injustice meted out to them at workplaces and told women to support their colleagues who fought for justice and against sexual abuse.Addressing the Coimbatore District Working Women's Conference organised by All India Trade Union Congress here on Friday, Ms. Kanimozhi stressed that women should shed inferiority complex while dealing with men.
"All along we have been told that we (women) are born to serve men and not to be on equal terms with them. We have been asked and accustomed not to raise any questions against them. This kind of a subordinate feeling prevents us from fighting any injustice,'' she further said.
She told women to lead a life for themselves and sink differences to put up a united fight for their cause.
Ms. Kanimozhi stressed that greater awareness was needed among women on their rights.
She ridiculed the manner in which the International Women's Day was being observed, as a celebration by offering discounts on clothes, jewellery and cosmetics instead of promoting women's rights.
Vaheetha Nizam, State convener of working women, AITUC, said a large number of women were losing their jobs and their livelihood was at stake owing to liberalisation and globalisation policies.
Owing to the entry of multinational companies into retailing, small-scale and cottage industries were facing threat. Again poor women were the victims of this process, she said.
Despite many laws and Acts providing equal rights and equal wages to women, none of them were being implemented in letter and spirit, Ms Nizam said.
Coimbatore MP and AITUC State president K. Subbarayan, AITUC leaders T.M. Moorthy and R.A. Govindarajan spoke.
