CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation will modernise the Perambur slaughterhouse with inputs from consultants, Mayor M. Subramanian said on Saturday. In a press note, he clarified that the project was not being shelved.

According to him, the foundation stone was laid in 2001 by Minister for Local Administration and Town Planning M.K. Stalin when he was Mayor in 2001. He alleged that the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Khazhagam regime had neglected the project. The present Government had given the modernisation works to a contractor last year on a Build-Operate-Transfer basis. He had quoted Rs.25 crore. Since he was unable to provide on time proof of ability to pay, the deposit was forfeited. The contractor has contested this in court. The Corporation had found out that there were no legal restrictions on seeking to grant a new contract. The local body had decided to take up the task itself. It called for tenders for civil works and was preparing design plan estimates.
