Singer Nithyashree Mahadevan performs 'Thiruveni Sangamam'

CHENNAI: Singer Nithyashree Mahadevan presented an unforgettable evening of melodious music from films of yesteryear.

She drew from the legendary film songs of M.S. Subulakshmi. D.K. Pattammal and M.L. Vasanthakumari in a concert titled `Thiruveni Sangamam'.

And enjoying the show was Nithyashree's grandmother and veteran D.K. Pattammal, who sat for a while and lauded her granddaughter's talent.

"I am 88 and my husband Iswaran is 93. But we decided to come here and hear our granddaughter singing along with our great granddaughter Lavanya." Noting how even the children in the family were taking to singing, Ms. Pattammal said music was God's language.

The compere for the evening, Abdul Hameed, said Ms. Pattammal had not seen any film after her marriage. "She wanted to watch M.S. Subbulakshmi in `Meera' but she did not see the movie till it came on the small screen after nearly 35 years."

Immortal song

Ms. Nithyashree sang the immortal Meera song, `Kattrinile Varum Geetam'.

L. Krishnan was the conductor with able support from Balu and Balu's Sruthi music orchestra.
